Electrical Interconnection

ELECTRICAL INTERCONNECTION

A grid connection of sufficient capacity is required to enable the export of energy generated by the Magarini Solar Park limited. Kenya Power owns all the transmission network built before the formation of KETRACO and all distribution network in Kenya. However Kenya Power operates and maintains the transmission network in Kenya including the transmission lines built by KETRACO.
As part of the feasibility study for the Magarini Solar Park project, we have carried out a grid interconnection study to demonstrate the ability of the grid to receive the solar power generated, which is intermittent in nature without significant negative impact on the existing grid network, and particularly on power quality. The study covered the following areas:
Load Flow Studies to demonstrate that connection of the solar park as proposed will not cause network overloads at full production and network voltage at the Point of Connection (POC) will remain within +/-5% of the nominal value.
Short Circuit Fault Level Calculations both before and after the Solar Power Plant connection and to demonstrate that:
a. Existing network equipment ratings will be sufficient
b. ii. The power system at the POC is strong enough for connection of the proposed capacity of solar park and that voltage fluctuation and flicker severity at the recommended point of connection due to intermittency of solar power will not exceed recommended thresholds
